Spain’s competition authority fined Telefonica 5 million euros ($5.5 million) over an agreement with streaming platform Dazn for rights to broadcast Formula 1 motor racing, a decision that the company intends to appeal. Spain’s National Commission on Markets and Competition said late Monday that it found the agreement between Telefonica and Dazn was in breach of commitments the Spanish telecommunications company made as part of its acquisition of media company DTS in 2015.The commission said the agreement meant Telefonica excluded Formula 1 content from its 2021 wholesale channel offer and had clauses that resulted in “de facto” exclusivity. This didn’t comply with the company’s commitments related to the DTS acquisition, the commission said. In response, Telefonica said it will file an appeal before Spain’s National Court against the sanction, and that its agreement with Dazn to acquire the Formula 1 broadcasting rights was in line with its commitments in relation to the DTS deal.
Nexi on Tuesday backed its targets for the year after posting higher earnings and revenue for the second quarter. Daimler Truck on Tuesday reported higher revenue and net profit for the second quarter, boosted by pricing and demand, and backed its full-year guidance. The German truck and bus maker said net profit rose to 1.00 billion euros ($1.10 billion) from EUR946 billion in the second quarter of last year. Revenue jumped to EUR13.88 billion from EUR12.10 billion. Daimler’s adjusted earnings before interest and taxes climbed 41% to EUR1.43 billion, the company said. Its adjusted return on sales for the industrial business finished the quarter at 10.3% compared with 8.0% a year ago, while industrial free cash flow rose to EUR382 million following a EUR756 million loss in the second quarter of last year. Daimler cited high demand, strong pricing and improvements to the aftersales business as helping its performance in the quarter. Unit sales grew 9% to 131,888 but incoming orders declined 13% to 96,936. Earnings per share fell slightly to EUR1.11 from EUR1.12, Daimler said. Daimler confirmed its 2023 guidance, which it upgraded in July.
DHL owner Deutsche Post on Tuesday raised its guidance for 2023 despite reporting lower ernings and revenue for the second quarter, hurt by a combination of weaker demand and comparisons with last year’s record results. The German logistics group–also known as DHL Group–said it now expects earnings before interest and taxes for the full year to be between 6.2 billion and 7.0 billion euros ($6.82 billion-$7.70 billion), in light of what it called a resilient performance in the first half. It had previously guided for EBIT to be in a range of EUR6.0 billion to EUR7.0 billion. In its first set of results under Chief Executive Tobias Meyer, the company said quarterly net profit fell to EUR978 million from from EUR1.46 billion. This follows HSBC’s record-smashing first quarter, when profit hit $10.33 billion. Net interest income hit $18.26 billion, pushing revenue 50% higher to $36.9 billion. In the second quarter, HSBC said revenue rose by $4.5 billion to $16.7 billion, driven by growth across its global businesses, reflecting higher interest rates. HSBC said it will pay a dividend of $0.10 a share, in addition to the $0.10 dividend in the previous quarter, which was the bank’s first dividend since 2019. The lender also said it will buy back up to $2.0 billion of shares on top of the $2.0 billion share buyback announced in the first-quarter results.
