Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria is launching a share buyback program of up to 1 billion euros ($1.06 billion) after it received authorization from the European Central Bank. The Spanish bank said Monday that the buyback program, under which it intends to repurchase up to 564.6 million shares, will start Monday and end no later than September 2024. BBVA said in July it had requested ECB authorization to launch a buyback program alongside its second-quarter results.
Thruvision Group said it will miss current market expectations for the fiscal 2024 revenue due to a delay on an order from U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The London-listed provider of screening technology said Monday that the anticipated order didn’t get awarded in September due to U.S. Federal Government and Departmental budget challenges. “Without the Customs and Border Protection order there will be a material impact on the group’s performance in the second half and for the current financial year as a whole,” it added. The company added that revenue for first half ended Sept. 30 grew by an estimated 27% to around 3.5 million pounds ($4.3 million), up from GBP2.8 million reported in the six months of fiscal 2023. Thruvision added that it expects revenue for second half to be ahead of first-half levels.
United Utilities Group plans to invest 13.7 billion pounds ($16.7 billion) in its waste and wastewater infrastructure between 2025 and 2030, creating new jobs. The London-listed water company on Monday said it has submitted its business plan for the five-year period, which would drive regulatory capital value growth of 8.7% a year. It said the plan would support 30,000 jobs–of which 7,000 are new–in the North West of England. The company said the plan is set to be funded with equity and debt. “Our plan will secure water supplies for the future, halving the need for hosepipe bans, reduce storm overflow spills into our rivers and seas and upgrade our water network to cut leakage and service interruptions for customers,” Chief Executive Louise Beardmore said. It said current business for fiscal 2024 is in line with its expectations and backed its technical guidance for underlying performance for the year.
BAE Systems has been awarded 3.95 billion pounds ($4.82 billion) by the U.K. government for the next phase of its nuclear-powered attack submarine program, part of a security pact between the U.S., U.K. and Australia. The U.K. defense-and-aerospace group said Sunday that the funding will cover development work until 2028, allowing it to move into the detailed design phase of the program and begin to procure items with long lead times. Manufacturing will start at the end of the decade, with the first boat expected to be delivered in the late 2030s. Early design work had started in 2021. “We’re incredibly proud of our role in the delivery of this vitally important, tri-nation submarine program,” Chief Executive Charles Woodburn said.
The company said the new submarine, dubbed SSN-AUKUS, will be the largest attack submarine the Royal Navy has ever operated. It will eventually replace the Astute class, which BAE builds at its site in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria.
BAE Systems has delivered five of seven Astute class submarines to the navy, with the remaining two boats at advanced stages of construction.
The funding will also cover significant infrastructure investment at the Barrow-in-Furness site, investment in the supply chain and recruitment of more than 5,000 people. The business plans to recruit an additional 2,700 people next year, the company said. On Sunday, Babcock International also said it has signed a five-year contract to provide input into the detailed design of SSN-AUKUS. “This multi-billion-pound investment in the AUKUS submarine programme will help deliver the long term hunter-killer submarine capabilities the U.K. needs to maintain our strategic advantage and secure our leading place in a contested global order,” British Defence Secretary Grant Shapps said.
The AUKUS security pact was first disclosed in September 2021, and includes providing Australia with nuclear-powered submarines. Beyond that, it includes using Australia to produce armed drones, rocket motors and other equipment for the Pentagon. China was vocal in its opposition to the plan at the time, saying it reflected a Cold War mentality and that it would encourage an arms race and undermine stability in the Asia-Pacific.
