Ahold Delhaize (AS:AD) on Wednesday said it is cautiously optimistic about 2025 despite market volatility anticipating continued progress in key financial and operational areas.

This is driven by their Growing Together strategy with ongoing investments in omnichannel platforms competitive pricing and store growth supporting their focus on customer loyalty and market leadership.

Net sales in the fourth quarter reached €23.3 billion, marking a modest increase of 0.6% at constant exchange rates.

This growth was tempered by several factors, including the divestment of FreshDirect, the closure of underperforming Stop & Shop stores, and the cessation of tobacco sales in the Netherlands.

Excluding these elements, net sales would have been 2.1 percentage points higher. For the full year, total net sales stood at €89.4 billion, reflecting a 0.9% increase at constant rates.

Comparable sales, excluding gasoline, rose by 1.4% in the fourth quarter, with a slight advantage in the U.S. market at 1.4% compared to 1.2% in Europe.

The U.S. segment showed signs of recovery in volume, particularly during the holiday season. Food Lion maintained its growth streak, marking its 49th consecutive quarter of comparable store sales growth.

Online sales continued to be a bright spot, increasing by 5.8% at constant exchange rates, with double-digit growth in online grocery excluding FreshDirect.

Despite these gains, profitability showed some pressure. The underlying operating margin stood at 4.1% in the fourth quarter, a decrease of 0.2 percentage points, mainly due to price investments in the U.S. and lower one-time gains.

Diluted underlying earnings per share declined by 6.6% to €0.69, while IFRS operating income fell by 10% to €607 million.

Full-year results were in line with expectations, with an underlying operating margin of 4.0% and diluted underlying EPS at €2.54.

Ahold Delhaize plans to boost earnings by opening more stores, remodeling existing ones, and integrating new technology.

The 2025 Profi acquisition should add about €3 billion in annual net sales. However, Stop & Shop closures and further tobacco sales restrictions in Belgium and the Netherlands will negatively impact comparable sales.

The company’s free cash flow remained strong, reaching €2.5 billion in 2024, exceeding its original target. For 2025, free cash flow is projected at a minimum of €2.2 billion, with gross capital expenditures of around €2.7 billion.

Without a doubt, 2024 has been a dynamic year with a lot to deal with: inflation, volatility in commodities and supply chain, social and political tensions and fast-paced changes due to new technologies that impact how we work and how we live,” said Frans Muller, chief executive at Ahold Delhaize in a statement.

By leveraging its Save for Our Customers initiative, the company is reinforcing its price competitiveness. The efficiency-driven approach is expected to continue until 2025, with savings of at least €1.25 billion.

Ahold Delhaize has also proposed a 6.4% increase in its dividend to €1.17 per share. Additionally, the company has maintained its annual share buyback program at €1 billion.

Randstad, the world’s largest employment agency, reported a quarterly core profit above market expectations on Wednesday, citing its resilient business model and robust underlying performance in difficult market conditions.

Financial and political upheaval in markets such as France, Germany and Britain has led employers to limit hiring and discouraged people from changing jobs. That, coupled with lower unemployment levels, has caused recruiters to put out gloomy forecasts and profit warnings in recent weeks.

Randstad (AS:RAND)’s earnings before interest, taxes and amortization (EBITA) before one-offs was 200 million euros ($207 million) in the fourth quarter of 2024, above the 194 million expected by analysts on average in a company-provided consensus.

However, its net result swung to a loss of 149 million euros in the quarter, hit by a goodwill impairment of 121 million euros related to the Sweden and Enterprise United Kingdom (TADAWUL:4280) operating segments.

A fair value adjustment and impairments on its loans and financial commitments cost the group additional 139 million euros in the quarter, it said.

Randstad proposed a dividend of 1.62 euros per share to be paid for 2024.

Dutch brewer Heineken (AS:HEIN) reported annual profit growth on Wednesday that exceeded both forecasts and its own outlook, citing growth in its portfolio of premium-priced beers.

Heineken, the world’s second-largest brewer, saw an 8.3% increase in annual organic operating profit, surpassing analysts’ forecast of 5.3% and exceeding its own expectations of up to 8%.

The company announced a 1.5-billion-euro ($1.55 billion) share buyback programme spanning two years.

“We delivered solid results with broad-based growth and profit expansion,” CEO Dolf van den Brink said in a statement.

The profit beat will further reassure investors who have levelled criticisms at Heineken for both over- and under-promising with its outlook in recent years, and for volatility in its results.

Heineken forecast operating profit to expand between 4% and 8% in 2025. Analysts, on average, expect an annual growth of 5.8%.

Its fourth-quarter volumes and revenue grew 1.8% and 4.7%, respectively, on an organic basis, compared with analysts’ estimate for a 0.3% and 3.3% growth.

Carrefour said it plans to take full ownership of its Brazil unit and delist the business, offering 5.30 billion Brazilian reais ($919.5 million) for the shares it doesn’t already own.

The French grocer, which owns 67.4% of Carrefour Brazil, said late Tuesday that it decided to increase its ownership to 100% due to its confidence in the unit’s growth trajectory. Taking the business private will allow Carrefour to manage operations with more agility, it said.

Carrefour said minority shareholders in the business–formally known as Atacadao–will be offered either 7.70 reais a share in cash, one Carrefour share for every 11 shares in the Brazilian unit, or a combination of cash and stock. In the latter option, minority shareholders would get 3.85 reais a share in cash and one Carrefour share for every 22 shares in Carrefour Brazil.

The company said the board of directors of Carrefour Brazil unanimously recommended the offer.

Shares in the Brazilian subsidiary closed up 10% on Tuesday at 7.10 reais on reports Carrefour was considering a buyout, giving a market value to the unit as a whole of nearly 15 billion reais. Carrefour’s bid values the Brazilian business as a whole at 16.25 billion reais.

Carrefour said it expects the deal to help the group’s earnings from the first year.
